By the Russian Government Decree the Institute for Problems in Mechanical Engineering of the Russian Academy of Science was included into the list of scientific and educational institutions entitled to create the Dissertation Councils on their base and to establish, by their prescripts, the order of award of science-degrees.

According to the Federal Law and Edicts of RF Government, the right to award science-degrees at their own discretion is given currently to 32 organizations — 25 institutes of higher education and 7 scientific institutions. They may, among other things, to define the membership and requirements to the Dissertation Councils created on their base, to approve stipulations and so on.
